People in interracial dating shouldn’t be described by color but their names and personality and the love they have for each other. Saying so and so is not White or the other person is not Latina doesn’t really say much about an individual. Unfortunately, these are issues we have to deal with when it comes to interracial dating.

Shonda Rhimes, creator and executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy was being interviewed for some magazine a year ago. One thing we must admit is that this is the first television show that represents a multitude of interracial relationships without even making everything revolve around interracial dating. In fact, race is never discussed. And all she said was, “I think that issues of race are a larger conversation that people project on a relationship, but for the two people in it, that’s not the primary thing on their minds.”

I totally agree with her. If you ask people in interracial relationships, you will come to realize that they rarely discuss race because it’s not the biggest difference between them. Differences they dwell on may be stuff like profession or what pets they prefer. Well, I am not saying that race doesn’t affect people in interracial relationships at all. In a perfect world, it wouldn’t, and this world of ours is anything but perfect. The stares from people who don’t approve of interracial dating will always fall on every passing interracial couple. And one thing that can not be ignored is what these couples will tell their children when they encounter racism for being mixed race.

Most of the issues interracial couples face stem from society and the couple. Much as with every generation, people are accepting interracial dating more and more, the fact that interracial dating is newsworthy enough for people to write articles about it tells us something – we still have a long way to go. And when we keep asking the question: “Is love colorblind”, it’s enough proof. And one thing that Rhimes said was, “Part of a truly diverse world is not needing to make a statement about the fact that it’s a diverse world. When we get to that point, we’ve gotten somewhere.”
